How to Glue a Donkey to a f-Structure or Porting a Dynamic Meaning Representation Language into LFG's Linear Logic Based Glue-Language Semantics

چکیده
In this paper we replace the static meaning representation language in the LFG linear logic based glue language semantics approach Dalrymple et al., 1993b; Dalrymple et al., 1993a; Dalrymple et al., 1995b; Dalrymple et al., 1996] with a dynamic meaning language Muskens, 1994b; Muskens, 1994a]. This move extends the original approach to discourse phenomena and can be combined with the approach to underspeciication developed in Crouch and Genabith, 1996]. On the other hand it provides linear logic based approaches to quantiier scope and underspeciication for dynamic semantics. We brieey compare the results with some alternative approaches discussed in the literature and sketch a QLF Alshawi and Crouch, 1992] and a UDRS Reyle, 1995] style interpretation for a set of linear logic premises thus obtained.

Negative Polarity Licensing at the Syntax-Semantics Interface
Recent work on the syntax-semantics interface (see e.g. (Dalrymple et al., 1994)) uses a fragment of linear logic as a 'glue language' for assembling meanings compositionally. This paper presents a glue language account of how negative polarity items (e.g. ever, any) get licensed within the scope of negative or downward-entailing contexts (Ladusaw, 1979), e.g. Nobody ever left. This treatment o...
متن کاملPlural semantics for control sentences in LFG's ``glue'' interface
Control sentences have been extensively studied in the linguistic literature and semantic analysis of control has been proposed in the context of different linguistic theories. However, split control sentences, in which the subject and the object can both contribute to the meaning of the understood subject, haven’t received a comprehensive formal semantic analysis. In particular, in LFG and the...
متن کاملWhat’s behind meaning?
The paper addresses the main questions to be dealt with by any semantic theory which is committed to provide an explanation of how meaning is possible. On one side the paper argues that the resources provided by the development of mathematical logic, theoretical computer science, cognitive psychology, and general linguistics in the 20th Century, however indispensable to investigate the structur...
